BykimB Website

www.BykimB.com

YESSSSS!!!!  I can finally say the BykimB website is Done! =)  UN-BE-LEE-V-ABLE!!!

I’ve been harping on getting a website up for BykimB since I first started sewing (…5 Years ago…=/) but just could not pull it together.  All my other entrepreneur friends made it look so easy.  I’ve had 4 different friends all start businesses and all of a sudden (it seemed like) they’d pop up with a website one day!

And of course I was wide eyed each time someone new told me they just got their website up!

WHAT!  HOW?!

I think there’s probably a big conspiracy going on and there’s some website wizard that zaps their magic wand and POOF they have a brand new website!

Well not me.  But last weekend BykimB took a few final steps towards getting her own space in this internet eco-system!  WOoOOO HooOOOO!

I somehow managed to get my genius KP together with our sister in law Jelly to show me how to get this done.

KP did help me with my website previously with my former photographer who was suppose to complete this for me and I didn’t understand a word they said, and completely shut down with eyes glazed over when they attempted to explain what was going on, it sounded something like, “The HMTP told the HTML that the FTP, USP routed the IMAP and got mad at POP.  Blah blah blah…”

So I can only assume that progress was made when I saw a picture up with a toolbar at the top of the page.

But THIS time Jelly broke it down for me and now I can manage the site all by myself!  (I say that loosely.)  I think it still has a little ways to go but how exciting!!  I finally have something to put on my business cards! LOL

So excited for this progress and can’t wait for you all to check out the finished product!

Just taking baby steps =)

Jolisa’s Tote and Clutches *DONE*

Yay They are done!  Well ok ok they were done a long time ago but if you’ve been reading for a while you know I’m no stranger to a random blog hiatus.

(You should see how many drafts are saved on here! =/)

I digress…

Meeting with Jolisa for the drop off was amazing!  One.  It was great to catch up as she was the original By kimB “get it going” catalyst.  She schooled me on everything from mission statements to photoshoots.  Thank the Lord in heaven I met her!

Anyhow we met up at the cutest little cafe in Palo Alto where I got to present her with her awesome goods over a few tasty Tiger Chai Latte’s!  She ordered them for her boyfriends mother and wasn’t sure how she would react to seeing her sons clothing recreated into something new.

Luckily I got a text a few days later saying that she loved them!  She cried with joy and they may have to do this again sometime and get something else remade!

And for me that’s the best compliment!

Thank you Jolisa!  You’re the greatest!

Jolisa’s Tote and Clutches in Progess!

I’ve begun to cut, cut, cut and interface these pieces for Jolisa who I mentioned briefly in my Back on Track post and I swear I say this every time but I always laugh at myself because I always think I can get all of my items cut so quickly and it always takes forever!  I’ve been doing this for what?  4 years now?  And it still surprises me.  I think I just get so excited to work on new projects that I think my ambition will make it go faster haha.

I drew out all of the pattern pieces that I will need for this project in my handy dandy notebook just to make sure that I will have enough fabric for the 2 clutches and reversible tote that she ordered and it seems like it will be perfect.  All things considered I do need enough for lining as well.

During this project I finally gave up on the idea of using set patterns for my clutches because it’s really impossible when you are upcycling clothes.  I mean the pattern I used for my Samyama pouches were based off of left over/discarded scrap fabric, while these are being made from button up shirts, sports coats, slacks, vests, t-shirts etc… and there’s no way to just fold in half and blindly cut.

The only realistic way to get the clothes to do what I need them to do is to cut them all open so they lay flat, then see how much area I have to cut a square, which at times makes me red faced with frustration because I’m trying to fit a square peg in a round hole haha!

So far this project is going well.  The most interesting part has been deconstructing the sport coat,  there are so many seams and twists and turns it’s hard to get it to lay flat so I can cut out my needed shape.  I did find an area that worked well enough and ended up having to sew in a dart just so it wouldn’t pucker when it was laying flat.  Thank you Dr. Stark for teaching me how to make darts in my beginning sewing class in college.

I think these will turn out great!  Can’t wait to show you the finished product!

Enjoy!

Sarah’s Jacket Clutch!

With all the madness of the last cluster of months it’s been a while since I got my creative juices flowing and let them out all over my sewing machine, so I was so happy to make this clutch =)

I’ve made a clutch similar to this one before for Tiffany, for her to use on her wedding day.  You can read about that here.  Well Sarah was one of Tiffany’s beautiful bridesmaids and saw the jacket clutch that she’d had made and soon after ordered one for herself!

She sent me this gorgeous coat and the first thing I did before taking pictures of it was try it on!  Most of the time when I get something super cute to cut up I imagine NOT cutting it up and keeping it for myself haha!  Sometimes I half dial their phone number to boldly ask if I could just keep it for a little while and wear it before I change it into something new =)  I haven’t followed through with that yet!  But I can see it happening in the near future if you guys keep on sending me these awesome pieces!

My sister even came over while I was photographing it on Damsel (my half mannie) and wanted to keep it.  But I said NO and moved onward to cut it all up!

Luckily this jacket had amazing lining in it already so there was no need to have to match it with other fabrics.  It’s this awesome sort of glossy sage green and paired with the deep maroon, blue and green pattern from the outside of the jacket looked great together.

I used the same pattern for this one as I did the last one with a few minor adjustments and this time we didn’t use a belt to close it.  I used a magnetic snap on the inside as the closure and used the buttons from the sleeves as decoration on the front and back pocket.

I’m going to send this baby out tomorrow so I won’t be able to stare at it anymore.  I hope she likes it!

Thanks for stopping by!

As always

ENJOY!

Back on Track!!!!

Hey Friends!  I just stopped in for a quick update!  Is it just me or has life gotten super crazy lately!

Since October it’s been an absolute whirlwind in the BykimB world!  I went to Athens, Greece and London where my boyfriend now FIANCE proposed!  So I’ve been on this total emotional rollercoaster called “wedding planning” trying to figure out how women do this and stay sane haha!  I competed in a Pole Dancing competition and got 4th out of 17!  Was in my dear friends wedding, booked trips to New Mexico and New York for my other best friends wedding and I’ve moved out of my little studio back in with my parents until the wedding which is proving to be much better than expected!

Although the downside being that all of my stuff lives in boxes in the garage so whenever I need something (which is often) I have to go on a scavenger hunt for it box by box, because even though we accurately labeled all of the boxes we didn’t take much care in stacking them so now all the labels are facing inward!  So that effort proved to be pointless.

Today I braved the garage because I am starting new projects and had to find my sketchbooks, cutting boards, and pins (which I still have not found.)  And in the process found some balsamic vinegar, and my stuffed dog that I’ve been missing every night when I go to sleep, because yes I still sleep with my stuffed dog, don’t judge =)

Today I’m getting started on some clutches and a tote for two wonderful women.  Jolisa who has helped me tremendously in the past, helping to get By kimB in the right direction and Sarah, the gorgeous woman and awesome dancer who married her high school sweetheart, who I met in the far away land of high school!  (We sat by each other in Spanish class!)

I’m SO excited to start creating something new and getting my schedule back in tact!  I’ll be talking to you soon!

Katie’s Quilt *DONE*

I’ve always wondered what it would be like to make a jigsaw like quilt.  And I finally got a request for one.

Definitely easier said than done!

In my last post about this I posted a picture of one of the diagrams I drew in order to make sure all of the shirts were properly represented and that although it was suppose to be random, still had a cohesive look.  I drew 4 of these until I finally got it right.

After I made this quilt I showed a picture of it to my 4 year old niece and her face lit up at the sight of all these cartoons and graphic images!  She immediately pointed to the Jem and the Rockstars piece and said “I WANT THAT!!!!!”

It was the cutest thing!

So Katie your quilt has been kid approved!  The best kind of approval there is =)

This was another great project and was an awesome challenge, but this is probably not an item I will be adding to the BykimB menu!

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

And thanks for stopping by!

Poletential Shop Night!

How exciting!  Earlier this month I was honored to be one of the vendors at Poletential‘s first shop night at their studio.

I must admit.  I was pretty nervous to present myself in person for the first time to strangers.  After 4 years of doing this I’ve never done a craft fair, house party or any of the other entrepreneurial things you’re suppose to do when you start a homemade business.

So I worked like a dog the week before and barely got any sleep getting some of these pouches done so I had more inventory to present on my little table.  I know those things are small, but boy do they take me some time to make!  Sleep was not had this week! =)

It didn’t occur to me until 11pm the night before that I needed to Merchandise my table and that I would have to find a table that would actually fit into my little Camry, so needless to say I was running around all night Thursday and all morning Friday trying to get all of my errands done in preparation for the Shop Night.

I arrived at night set up my little area and put my retail face on =D!  haha  I had major moments of flashback into being in my former retail stores, greeting people, handing out business cards and explaining to people what exactly it is that I do.  It was amazing to see all of the positive reactions to my little business.  People love the idea of making something out of things that they own, or from things that are really meaningful to them

It reminded me again why I love to do what I do.  It’s for the look on people’s faces when they start recounting all of the memories that they can save and make come to life again.  You can see the wheels start turning in their brain as they start imagining what their items would look like and how it would make them feel to carry a piece of that with them on a regular basis.

Over all it was a great experience and I had so much fun and got to sell some products!  I don’t have any of these events lined up, but next time I do I will be prepared! =)

Thank you to everyone who stopped by!
